WordPress offers third-party blog hosting at their WordPress.com site. While this is a great way to get a website when you don’t have any money, it is a good idea to move to your own self-hosted site as soon as you can. You’ll have more freedom to do what you want with your website, including earning money from it. After securing the cheap WordPress hosting you can find, here are the steps to transferring your blog.
The first step is to export the data from your current blog. Go to your blog’s dashboard and click on Export. It should be under the Tools section of the menu. While WordPress.com offers a guided transfer option, it costs $129 to have them move your blog. It’s so simple to do it yourself that there is no reason to spend that kind of money. Click the Export option and save the resulting XML file.
On your self-hosted blog, click on Import (located under Tools) and choose the WordPress. Your blog will install the WordPress Importer plugin that will upload and convert all of the information in the XML file from your old blog to your new one. Once the importer is installed, upload the XML file. If you have more than one author on your blog, select the one the posts should be attributed to.
Depending on the size of your blog, it may take a few minutes for everything to upload. Once it is done, though, all of your previous posts will have transferred to your new blog. You can then start blogging from new home and take advantage of all the options your best cheap web hosting package affords you.
